So as I was sitting in Global Village coffee shop the other day with Allison Snyder, she was telling me about this tweet she saw from @MarkDriscoll the lead pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, on a man who claims to be the AntiChrist, but it’s a good thing.

If you’ve watched the video, you’re probably a bit disturbed by what you have seen. So, in hopes that I may catch some of his prospective followers in the net of Scripture before he leads any astray, or you meet any and want to lovingly point them back to the real Jesus, who does in no way teach this man’s message.
First, let’s go over who the “pastor” is. His name is Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda, who originally hails from Puerto Rico, but now leads his church in Florida and is gathering a wide following. He has been convicted several times of larceny.
Currently, he tells his followers that he is Jesus returned, sort of, it get a bit confusing shifting through all the crazy. They celebrate Christmas on April 22, Miranda’s birthday, as the “real” Christmas. He has also recently proclaimed that he will be “transfigured in glory” on Saturday, June 30, 2011. He preaches there in no sin anymore, and that we are already reigning in heaven as we speak. He claims that he is God, and has told his congregation that the term “antichrist” is not a bad thing, but been hijacked and mistranslated.
So here we go on the apologetics, because, as Christians, we need to fight this. I don’t care how pacifist you think you are, this is a cancer that hates the real Jesus, and needs to be corrected.
So, our only mentions of the words antichrist and antichrists comes 4 times in the New Testament in the 1 and 2nd epistles of John. The word is ἀντίχριστος, pronounced än-tē’-khrē-stos, which sort of spells out to antichristos. Anti meaning “against,” “opposed to,” or “in place of.” Christos means Christ. So, that’s not a bad translation at all.
Here are all the verses mentioning the antichrist:
1 John 2:18, 22 // Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour…. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
1 John 4:3 // …And every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
2 John 1:7 // For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.
Now, all of these passages seem to encourage Miranda, because he claims Jesus in the flesh, right? Well, sort of. It is really referring to deceitful false prophets who would say that they have a new gospel. Doesn’t Miranda say that he is a “new” Christ rather than the AntiChrist? John implores us in 1 John 2:24 “Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.” This lines up way more with what Jesus teaches us about his sovereignty and Jesus’ power to bring us with grace and truth to the Father by his sacrifice.
There is no new gospel to be taught, only that which we hear from Jesus Christ, not from some thief from Florida. In more of 1 John, it discusses his greed for money and in 1 Timothy, his relish of controversy. I mean, this dude is having people tattoo 666 on themselves!? Revelation 14:9-12, “A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” 12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.”
But even for this there is forgiveness. For all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved!
“And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.” Luke 12:10. Your sin is not yet so great as to be unforgivable! Even if you have that tattoo, it will mean nothing if you repent of it! Just as it says in Isaiah 65:17, “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.”
Let us preach this to them, that they, like us, believed a lie, but are not beyond the redemption of Jesus, no matter how many tattoos they get, or how much money they funnel into his pocket! You, like them, were once alienated in mind, but now we are redeemed by the blood of our good Savior.
